Brazil has expanded its presence among the world's most specialized hospitals. And this also reinforces the importance of considering hospital networks when choosing a health insurance plan.

Brazil has just gained even more prominence on the international healthcare scene.

According to the World's Best Specialized Hospitals 2027 ranking, prepared by Newsweek in partnership with Statista, 33 Brazilian hospitals are among the world's most specialized institutions across different medical fields. In the previous edition, there were 22 Brazilian institutions.

The ranking covers 13 medical specialties and considers factors such as reputation among healthcare professionals, accreditations and certifications, as well as the implementation of patient-reported outcome measures, known as PROMs.

Einstein, Sírio-Libanês and other major institutions stand out

Among Brazilian hospitals, Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein is one of the main highlights, ranking as the leading Brazilian institution in eight of the 13 specialties represented by Brazilian hospitals.

Einstein ranks ahead of other Brazilian hospitals in areas such as:

Hospital Sírio-Libanês ranks first among Brazilian institutions in Oncology and Urology. InCor – Instituto do Coração holds the top national position in Cardiac Surgery, while A.C.Camargo Cancer Center leads among Brazilian hospitals in Pediatrics.

In Gastroenterology, for example, Einstein ranked 8th worldwide, while Sírio-Libanês ranked 19th worldwide in Oncology. InCor ranked 22nd worldwide in Cardiac Surgery.

São Paulo concentrates most of Brazil's hospitals on the list

For those living in São Paulo, the news is even more significant.

Of the 33 Brazilian hospitals included in the ranking, 21 are located in the city of São Paulo. Rio de Janeiro follows with seven institutions, while Porto Alegre has two. Belo Horizonte, Campinas and Curitiba each have one institution.

Among the São Paulo hospitals mentioned are:

The complete list includes both public and private institutions and covers different medical specialties.

But what does this have to do with your health insurance plan?

A lot.

When looking for a health insurance plan, it is very common to look at the monthly premium first. But the price of the plan is only one part of the decision.

One of the most important factors is understanding which hospitals are included in the plan's accredited network, in which situations they can be used, and what the applicable care conditions are.

After all, there is little benefit in choosing a plan based solely on price if, when you actually need medical care, the hospital you consider a reference is not available within that plan's network.

That's why choosing a health insurance plan needs to go beyond the monthly premium.

Hospital network, coverage and cost need to work together

A plan that provides access to leading hospitals may have different characteristics from another product offered by the same insurer.

The hospital network can vary according to:

That's why there is no single health insurance plan that is ideal for everyone.

For a company, for example, the goal may be to offer employees access to a strong hospital network without compromising the company's budget. For a family, other priorities may matter, such as pediatric care, maternity services, specific medical specialties or hospitals close to home.
